Both physical effects require that the air supply is guaranteed so that an airflow is created which supplies oxygen, thereby achieving very high temperatures (up to 800 degrees) on the one hand and, at the same time (and this is the most important point), directing the heat upwards through the airflow to reach the pot almost completely, instead of radiating it out the sides.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Optimal operation:\u003c\/strong\u003e A Hobo stove is operated optimally when there is comparatively little fuel in the combustion chamber. The wood then burns very hot, the heat is only partially transferred to the outer walls, smoke and soot cannot form (if soot does form, it burns off without leaving any residue), and there is almost no warping since there is no localized heating of the side walls. If the Hobo is fired optimally, there will be almost no residue or ash, just a tiny pile of very light, almost white ash.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e Care should also be taken to avoid \"yo-yo heating\" (constantly changing temperatures) and extreme temperature differences (quenching in cold water).\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e In many of the videos widely available on the internet, however, the boxes are stuffed to the brim, and you can sometimes see meter-high flames shooting out of the Hobo. Slight warping is therefore inevitable and normal.
