PRODUCT DETAILS

All about Bushcraft - Bushbox LF Outdoor Stove

The Bushbox LF (large, foldable) is, so to speak, the missing link between the Bushbox and the Bushbox XL, combining the best of both worlds: very small, yet foldable, and with as good a draft as a larger model. Naturally, the Bushbox LF is manufactured using the same special and unique hinges as the Bushbox XL: This extremely sophisticated hinge technology ensures that the hinges can never become clogged.

The Bushbox LF is delivered together with a versatile pot support set; alternatively, it is also available as a set (additionally including an outdoor bag and a universal grate).

Like all Bushcraft stoves, the Bushbox LF is manufactured entirely in Germany from 1.4301 stainless steel and is multi-fuel capable (operation with wood, Esbit, Trangia, etc. is possible).

Dimensions: 14 x 10 x 1.2 cm (folded), 14 x 10 x 10 cm (unfolded)

Notes on Hobo stove firing

Soot/Smoke: Soot formation always means: lack of oxygen and combustion temperatures that are too low. When fired correctly, no significant soot can form with a Bushbox XL or a Bushbox LF. Soot and smoke are always signs of improper firing.

Chimney effect: The basic principle of a Hobo stove is the chimney effect; our stoves are additionally built so that the Coanda effect can also take better effect. Both physical phenomena require that the air supply is guaranteed so that an air current is created which supplies oxygen, whereby on the one hand very high temperatures are reached (up to 800 degrees) and at the same time (and this is the most important point) the heat is carried upwards by the air current and reaches the pot almost completely instead of radiating off the sides.

Optimal operation:
A Hobo stove is operated optimally when there is relatively little fuel in the combustion chamber. The wood then burns very hot, the heat is only partially transferred to the outer walls, smoke and soot cannot form (if soot does form, it burns off without residue), and almost no warping occurs because there is no localized heating of the side walls. If the Hobo is fired optimally, there is also almost no residue or ash, just a tiny pile of very light, almost white ash.

Care should also be taken to avoid "yo-yo heating" (constantly changing temperatures) and extreme temperature differences (quenching in cold water).

However, in many of the videos circulating on the internet, the boxes are stuffed to the brim, and you sometimes see flames a meter high shooting out of the Hobo. This leads to the following problems: The chimney effect is severely restricted, the combustion temperature drops to around 200-300 degrees, and smoke and soot are produced. Burning material touches the side walls in many places, which leads to strongly uneven heating of the side walls and at the same time to the transfer of a lot of energy to the side walls. Heat islands or a strong temperature gradient between top and bottom are created, with which another physical effect can develop optimally, namely warping.

Improper use: Many misunderstandings also arise from the fact that some of our customers use the stoves as a mobile campfire and expose them to hours of yo-yo heating and occasional over-firing. While our stoves must prove that they can withstand such things and still be folded afterwards or remain fully functional, no normal steel survives this permanently without damage (just as little as quenching in cold water).

Warping: Warping is a physical phenomenon that is inevitable when metal is heated unevenly (and therefore expands unevenly). Slight warping is therefore unavoidable and normal. However, all our Hobo stoves are designed so that warping only occurs to a very moderate extent when used as intended, and the function of the Hobo stove is in no way impaired.
