All about Bushcraft - Bushbox Outdoor Stove
The Bushbox is a small, handy, and affordable folding hobo stove. Made of rustproof stainless steel (1.4301) and yet weighing only 270 grams (including the bag), it fits into any trouser pocket at 9 x 11.5 cm and delivers huge performance on a small budget. Includes an integrated ash pan as floor protection. Thanks to the included pot supports, it can be used for any cup size or as a grill. Alternatively, it can also be used with a Trangia, fuel paste, Esbit, etc., or as a wind shield for burners. The stove is manufactured entirely in Germany. The Bushbox is delivered in a cotton bag (as outer packaging); we also offer an additional heavy-duty outdoor bag.
Notes
Surface: During production, slight scratches may occur on one side of the parts. We have consciously decided against having these scratches removed for several reasons: Grinding them down produces a very fine, harmful dust that we do not want to expose the manufacturer's staff to unnecessarily. Furthermore, the use of polishing agents would have required the use of environmentally harmful chemical substances. Grinding them down for purely aesthetic reasons would also make the Bushbox more expensive – unnecessarily so, as the slight scratches are no longer visible after the first time it is heated anyway.
Disassembly: The Bushbox is equipped with a highly sophisticated system that guarantees the stability of the hobo stove. Folding hobo stoves usually tend to be unstable – the Bushbox, on the other hand, has small "noses" lasered into the slot guides that ensure the side parts snap into place securely. For disassembly, it is therefore important to press the short side parts slightly outward at the top when taking it apart (let the parts cool down first!) – then the parts can be easily detached.
Technical data
Pack size: The Bushbox measures 9 x 11.5 cm when folded (with a thickness of 1 cm). Set up and ready for operation, the Bushbox has a height of 11.5 cm and a side length of 8 cm. The weight is 260 grams. Material: rustproof stainless steel (0.8 mm material thickness, 1.4301). The delivery includes a light linen bag (as outer packaging).

Notes on Hobo firing
Soot/smoke: Soot formation always means: oxygen deficiency and a combustion temperature that is too low. When fired correctly, no significant soot can form in a Bushbox XL or a Bushbox LF. Soot and smoke are always signs of incorrect firing.
Chimney effect: The basic principle of a hobo stove is the chimney effect; our stoves are also built in such a way that the Coanda effect can be better utilized. Both physical effects require that the air supply is guaranteed, so that an air flow is created that supplies oxygen, which on one hand reaches very high temperatures (up to 800 degrees) and at the same time (and this is the most important point) dissipates the heat upwards through the air flow, where it reaches the pot almost completely instead of radiating out the sides.
Optimal operation: A hobo stove is operated optimally when there is comparatively little fuel in the combustion chamber. The wood then burns very hot, the heat is only partially transferred to the outer walls, smoke and soot cannot form (if soot does form, it burns off without residue), and there is almost no warping because there is no localized heating of the side walls. If the hobo has been fired optimally, there will also be almost no residue or ash, only a tiny pile of very light, almost white ash.
Care should also be taken to avoid "yo-yo heating" (constantly changing temperatures) and extreme temperature differences (quenching in cold water).
However, in many of the videos circulating on the internet, the boxes are stuffed to the brim and you sometimes see a meter-high flame shooting out of the hobo. But this leads to the following problems: The chimney effect is severely restricted, the combustion temperature falls to around 200-300 degrees, and smoke and soot are produced. Burning material touches the side walls in many places, which leads to strongly uneven heating of the side walls and at the same time to the transfer of a lot of energy to the side walls. Heat islands or a strong temperature gradient between the top and bottom are created, which allows another physical effect to develop optimally: warping.
Improper use: Many misunderstandings also arise because some of our customers use the stoves as a mobile campfire and subject them to hours of yo-yo heating and intermittent overfiring. While our stoves must prove that they can withstand such things and still be foldable or remain fully functional afterward, no normal steel can withstand this permanently without damage (just as little as quenching in cold water).
Warping: Warping is a physical phenomenon that is inevitable when metal is heated unevenly (and therefore expands unevenly). Slight warping is therefore unavoidable and normal. However, all our hobo stoves are designed in such a way that warping only occurs to a very moderate extent when used as intended and does not impair the function of the hobo in any way.
