PRODUCT DETAILS

All about Bushcraft - Bushbox XL Outdoor Stove

An extraordinarily efficient portable folding stove for grilling, cooking, and warming. When folded, it is only approx. 1 cm thick. Perfect for longer outdoor trips, camping, trekking, bushcraft, bikers, expeditions, and much more... Independent, versatile, and easy to use. Fuel is free everywhere in nature - twigs, branches, leaves, animal dung. Holding position for Trangia stoves.

800 grams in weight, packed size 19 x 12.5 x 1 cm

When folded, this ingenious hobo stove is only slightly thicker than 1 cm and can be stored almost anywhere. The Bushbox XL is simply unfolded at the hinges and is immediately ready for use (it can also be assembled without problems while wearing gloves or with numb hands, which has already been proven on expeditions).

The Bushbox XL works according to the chimney principle: air flows into the stove from below, even causing damp material to burn and generating strong heat, which is further supported by the fact that the heat, unlike an open flame, can hardly radiate to the sides and is therefore directed predominantly upwards.

The Bushbox XL is a miracle of efficiency. With just a few small twigs, you can bring water to a boil in under 4 minutes, grill meat, prepare food - and much more. In addition to virtually any natural or solid fuel such as wood, bark, charcoal (even dry animal dung), a spirit burner, Esbit tablets, or a gel stove can also be used as fuel. With the two included rods, an external heat source (e.g., Trangia) can be placed at any desired height in the Bushbox XL. These rods can also be inserted on top of the stove so that small vessels can be heated.

The included, highly versatile pot supports can alternatively be used as height adjustment when using other heat sources, as holding rods for transporting or moving the hot stove, and as a holder for the Trangia burner.
Accessories

A grill plate (not included) is available as a special accessory for the Bushbox XL, so that the Bushbox XL can also be used as a grill. In addition, a special insert for Trangia and wood pellets is available. Pot supports can also be ordered separately.

A robust outdoor bag is also available.

For users who want to use the Bushbox XL in combination with Trangia stoves, we recommend ordering an additional set of pot supports.

Notes on hobo stove firing

Soot/Smoke: Soot formation always means: lack of oxygen and too low a combustion temperature. When fired correctly, no significant soot can be produced with a Bushbox XL or a Bushbox LF. Soot and smoke are always signs of incorrect firing.

Chimney effect: The basic principle of a hobo stove is the chimney effect; our stoves are also built in such a way that the Coanda effect can better come into play. Both physical effects assume that the air supply is guaranteed so that an air flow is created that supplies oxygen, which on one hand reaches very high temperatures (up to 800 degrees) and at the same time (and this is the most important point) the heat is dissipated upwards by the air flow and reaches the pot almost completely, instead of radiating via the sides.

Optimal operation:
A hobo stove is operated optimally when there is comparatively little fuel in the combustion chamber. The wood then burns very hot, the heat is only partially transferred to the outer walls, smoke and soot cannot form (if soot does form, it burns off without residue), and there is almost no warping because there is no localized heating of the side walls. If the hobo has been fired optimally, there is also almost no residue or ash, just a tiny pile of very light, almost white ash.

Care should also be taken to avoid "yo-yo heating" (constantly changing temperatures) and extreme temperature differences (quenching in cold water).

In very many of the videos distributed on the Internet, however, the boxes are stuffed to the brim and you can sometimes see a flame a meter high hitting out of the hobo. However, this leads to the following problems: The chimney effect is severely restricted, the combustion temperature drops to around 200-300 degrees, and smoke and soot are produced. Burning material touches the side walls in many places, which leads to strongly uneven heating of the side walls and at the same time the transfer of a lot of energy to the side walls. Heat islands or a strong temperature gradient between the top and bottom are created, with which another physical effect can develop optimally, namely warping.

Improper use: Many misunderstandings also arise from the fact that some of our customers use the stoves as a mobile campfire and expose them to hours of yo-yo heating and temporary overheating. Our stoves must prove that they can withstand such things and still be foldable or remain fully functional afterwards, but no normal steel can survive that permanently without damage (just as little as quenching in cold water).

Warping: Warping is a physical phenomenon that is inevitable when metal is heated unevenly (and therefore expands unevenly). Slight warping is therefore inevitable and thus normal. All our hobo stoves are, however, designed in such a way that warping only occurs to a very moderate extent during proper use and the function of the hobo is in no way impaired.
